The axel is a jump taken off of a forward outride edge. It rotates 1 1/2 times and then comes down on a backward outside edge on the opposite foot.
The axel is a big milestone in skaters careers because it is a stepping stone to doubles. If you are working on your axel and having trouble, please watch this video and work on the exercises. These are exercises I still use to this day because they are very well suited for double axel as well.
