Newbies
First of all, with stretching please remember to take your time. It is better to hold a less extreme position for longer than drop into a too advanced position and not be able to hold it out of sheer pain.

"No pain, no gain"
This is simply untrue when it comes to stretching. Feeling a pull is normal but feeling a fiery or tingly sensation is not good.

Avoid bouncing
Bouncing in stretches is known as ballistic stretching. Ballistic stretching can stretch your muscles too far and fast which can result in strained and pulled muscles.

Warm up before you stretch
Muscles are more elastic when you stretch with warm muscles. Always warm up with light jogging, jumping jacks or anything else that gets your blood pumping.

Stretch regularly
Being consistent and dedicated with your stretching will yield the best results.
